It's About Finesse,

Not About Force

Pat to DISLODGE,
SQUEEZE to SWEEP the air bubbles out.

Watch this short video for guidance and support on the technique:

Key Steps to Get All the Bubbles Out

ACTIONS:

  • You need to pat your baby's back to DISLODGE the bubbles
  • You need to SQUEEZE the bubbles up to help them exit
  • PAT to DISLODGE, and SQUEEZE to Exit

POSITIONING:

  • You need counter pressure on your baby's front where her stomach meets her food tube (esophagus)
    • Having knees up to chest helps achieve this
  • You want to gently and subtly elongate her esophagus aka arch her back, to let the bubbles loose
    • Using fingers or the meat of your thumb to squeeze the bubbles up from base of spine to upper back

TIMING:

  • Burp mid feed and after the feed
  • Burp before all nap putdowns and bedtime
  • Short 20 minute nap waking up crying?  Trying burping to alleviate discomfort and resume sleep
